Are the best extra virgin olive oils in the world from Andalusia?

Andalusia is undoubtedly the largest olive-growing region in the world, and this is no recent development. Olive trees have covered this magnificent region for millennia. This treasure makes it the most qualified region in the world to produce green gold. But what is Andalusian olive oil really worth?

In Andalusia you will find the best olive oils in the world.
The 2017 World’s Best Olive Oils ranking by the International Olive Council ranked 7 Spanish olive oils among the top 10. And believe it or not, they are all Andalusian.

As for the organic oil ranking, and still in the world ranking, 8 are Spanish and 6 are Andalusian.

A quick reminder:

The place of harvest and extraction must appear on the label of virgin and extra virgin oils. The mention "European Union origin" refers to an authorized blend of oils from the main European producers (Italy, Spain, Greece, France, Portugal, Slovenia).

"French olive oil" indicates a blend of oils from French producing regions (Provence, for example). The protected designation of origin (PDO) guarantees that the oil comes from a specific terroir and is made from traditional varieties (picholine, aglandau, tanche, salonenque, verdale...). France has 8 PDOs: Nyons, Vallée-des-Baux-de-Provence, Haute-Provence, Aix-en-Provence, Nice, Nîmes, Corsica, Provence.
As you may have guessed, if you buy French olive oil, check that the PDO is on the label, otherwise there is a strong chance that some of the Spanish production will be in the French bottle you have just bought.

So why not buy Andalusian oil directly!

Andalusia alone represents 19% of world production. Finca el Trueno, located in the Sierra Magina, produces only 8 to 12,000 liters of nectar per year.  Finca el Trueno is 100% Andalusian oil from the Sierra Magina.
